The MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, for a better date on the calendar

Mayakoba, Quintana Roo, May 25, 2025.– After the first edition of the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, which the organizers described as successful, they are now thinking about how to improve for next year’s tournament.

Gustavo Santoscoy García, director of the event and CEO of GS Sports Management, pointed out that the first thing they will look for is a better date in the LPGA calendar, “but it is practically confirmed that next year it will be April 28, two weeks before the US Open, so we will try to have a better list of players,” he explained.

Because this first event was held a week before the US Open (May 29 to June 1), which made it difficult for some top players to attend. “The intention of changing the date is, first of all that we have better weather, a little less heat and above all because we have the opportunity to bring better players during that date.  One of the drawbacks was that next week is the US Open, so some of the top players are careful, some others see it as an opportunity, here the course conditions are a little different, a little warmer, we talk about the bounce of the ball is also very different, so that’s why next year we will have a much more complete field, “he said.

He added that for a first edition, the number of attendees was quite good, “we are talking about 2,500 people entered yesterday during the course of the day, today we are at 3,500, being the first year for us it is a double sold out, we had to stop selling tickets so as not to exceed the operation, but knowing that the tournament is a success, that people liked it, next year we will work to receive more people during the weekend”.

The comments received from the players regarding the El Camaleón course were positive, as well as from the LPGA specialists, whose agronomist commented that it is one of the courses in the best conditions.

And as for the participation of the Mexicans, of whom only Maria Fassi made the cut, he was confident that next year there will be better results, since that will definitely have an impact on the tournament. “On Thursday and Friday we saw a large group of fans following Isabela Fierro, Gaby Lopez, Maria Fassi, on Friday also, on Saturday there were many people following the leading group and Maria, but I think that for next year if we manage to have three Mexicans it would be phenomenal, and obviously it would impact a lot, especially in the development of the sport, of the coverage that can be given to those Mexicans”, he considered.
