Maria Fassi stands up for Mexico

Mayakoba, Quintana Roo, May 23, 2025.- In an exciting closing of her second round at the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, Maria Fassi carded a 72, par of field and with a cumulative +3, after two days of competition, ensure her presence for the weekend in the event.

On the other hand, Gaby Lopez, the only tricolor with LPGA card, did not achieve her goal, and with a score of 73 (+1), and accumulated +8 she did not make the cut, like the rest of the Mexicans.

Fassi signed the best round so far this season in the LPGA; this is her second tournament in this tour. She previously participated in the Ford Championship and her best round was 76 strokes.

The 27-year-old from Hidalgo, who started with a +3 for this second round, made four birdies during the day, on holes 2, 14, 15 and 18, and committed the same number of bogeys (holes 1, 11, 13 and 17).

With the bogey on the 17th hole, Maria was at +4, at risk of not making the cut, but on the 18th she made the birdie that kept her with the score that gave her the pass to the last two rounds.

Maria, who competes in the Epson Tour, celebrated her performance in the tournament, being the only Mexican still alive. “I’m super proud especially of the mental work I did in the last holes, knowing that I can do it,” she explained.

Regarding the difference in her game on Thursday, when she finished +3 and today, which ended in par, she mentioned that in the morning it plays easier, “but in terms of game very little changed. Yesterday there were a couple of putts that didn’t go in, but they were well executed shots. I am happy to give joy to all the people who came to see me”.

Gaby Lopez acknowledged said that beyond the result, she rescues the huge opportunity for what is coming and the attitude she had today, admitting that her first round conditioned the game for this Friday. “Today was not such a bad day, it was yesterday, it’s hard to come back from so many strokes, but in the end knowing that everything is within me”, she commented, and added that although it was a frustrating week on the course, it leaves her happy that so many people came to support her.

The rest of the Mexican players did not make the cut either. Andrea Ostos carded 79 strokes (+7), for a cumulative score of +13 that left her with no chance of staying in the competition (T124). The Chihuahua native had only one birdie on the day, six bogeys and a double bogey.

Clarisa Temelo concluded the second round with 81 strokes (+9) and totaled +16 (132).

Isabella Fierro finished with 74 strokes (+2), to total +10 (T114); Fernanda Lira finished her round with 76 strokes (+4), +8 overall (T97). María Balcázar finished the second round with 80 (+8) and total of +12 (T119) and Carolina Rotzinger signed a card of 78 (+6) to have a cumulative +25 (135).
