María Fassi motivated for her first professional tournament in Mexico
Mayakoba, Quintana Roo, May 20, 2025.- A total of eight national golfers will represent the host country in the return of the LPGA tour, to play in the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, among the most experienced is María Fassi from Hidalgo, who will make her debut in a professional tournament in Aztec territory.
“Obviously very happy to be playing at home this week. It’s my first time in Mexico as a professional, so it’s a very special week for me,” said the 27-year-old player who participated in the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and who along with Lorena Ochoa and Gaby Lopez, are seen as referents of Mexican golf.
“It is a huge responsibility, but also a giant honor to be the ones who can inspire and set an example to the new generations who want to make a career in professional golf, something that until before Lorena Ochoa, seemed impossible and now thanks to the effort we have made, but especially having a reference like her, now we are eight who are playing this week here, it fills me with pride to be one more Mexican who is competing on the LPGA Tour.”
Today, Maria Fassi Alvarez, received great news, being confirmed by the USGA, to be part of the field of players who will participate in the U.S. Women’s Open, presented by Ally, the second major of the 2025 season to be held in Erin, Winconsin, from May 29 to June 1.
“I’m very excited, There was a lot of hard work in qualifying to get to this position. I’m very happy to have this news and that I can enjoy this week a little bit more now; This gives me a giant relief, because it’s one more week that if we do things right, I’m going to be able to add points for the LPGA, be able to add points for the year and be able to start to take back a little bit more control over what’s going to be my rest of the season, because right now it’s a little bit uncertain,” said the best female collegiate golfer in the United States in 2018.
“For me, winning a tournament in Mexico is not the same as winning it abroad. I think the main rival to beat will be myself, I have been my worst enemy for a long time on the golf course, then if I win myself, I will be able to compete against anyone, I am convinced that I have the level to win an LPGA tournament, but the mental and emotional part, they have put me in places I don’t want”, explained the player who turned professional in 2019 and has earned 1.2 million dollars in her career. Maria started playing golf since she was 7 years old and in 2015 she was part of the Mexican team that participated in the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.
In addition to Fassi, Mexico will have María Balcázar, Isabella Fierro, Fernanda Lira, Gaby López, Andrea Ostos, Carolina Rotzinger and Clarisa Temelo participating this week at the El Camaleón course.
