The return of the LPGA to Mexico marks a new era for golf

Mayakoba, Quintana Roo, May 22, 2025.- The return of the LPGA to our country after eight years, with the MÉXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, goes beyond showcasing the best golfers in the world. For GS Sports Management, it is also an opportunity to create an ecosystem for the new generations of golfers.

Gustavo Santoscoy García, tournament director and CEO of GS Sports Management, held a press conference alongside Luis Durán, CEO of RLH Properties, to celebrate the success of the tournament’s first day. He highlighted the participation of eight Mexican players in the field and the boost they receive by playing on home soil.

“This tournament not only marks the return of top-level women’s golf to the country, but also the beginning of a new era for the sport in Mexico. The response we’ve received from players and fans has exceeded all expectations,” said Santoscoy, who emphasized the quality of the course and the unique atmosphere experienced on the first day.

“Also worth highlighting is the support we receive from the XUNTAS organization, which is helping all these young girls who are training hard. We’re creating the perfect golf ecosystem, where young players can grow and eventually, through our sponsor exemptions and the support of RLH, we can give them the chance to compete and debut at home in an LPGA event—making their path to success a little easier,” added Santoscoy.

The MÉXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba will remain in this destination for at least five years, but RLH’s intention is to bring more LPGA tournaments to Mexico, as stated by CEO Luis Durán.

“The PGA was at Mayakoba for 16 years, LIV a bit less, but we decided to go a different route and chose the LPGA, which aligns more with what we’re looking to develop and promote. We have a five-year contract, but we want to create something long-term. We are looking into holding more tournaments in places where we have other developments, such as Riviera Nayarit and Los Cabos,” the executive said.

Santoscoy and Durán agreed on highlighting the potential of women’s golf, seeing it not only as a sport but also as an experience that promotes tourism, entertainment, and social engagement.
