Maria Fassi, top Mexican after first round, bad day for Gaby Lopez
Mayakoba, Quintana Roo, May 22, 2025.- Gaby Lopez had a complicated start at the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, when she carded a 79 (+7), which placed her in 115th place at the El Camaleon Course, venue of the twelfth date of the LPGA season.
Gaby started in group 11 along with England’s Charley Hull and Japan’s Akie Iwai.
The Mexican player started with a bogey on hole 1 and followed with another on hole 2. The birdie came on hole 3, but in the first half of the round she was already +4, after three more bogeys on holes 5, 7 and 8.
However, the player from the capital considers that this Friday she can have another chance. “It was a quite complicated round for me, nothing went well today, but you have to keep your head up,” she acknowledged.
In the second half she added three bogeys, on holes 10, 14 and 15, but no birdies.
Gaby analyzed his performance coldly and said it was more a mental situation than a technical one. “I tensed up mentally, but you have to stay optimistic and give your best tomorrow.”
The Mexican had the support of a large group of fans, including several family members, who cheered her on at all times.
Currently ranked 59th in the LPGA rankings, Lopez came out as the highest-ranked Mexican of the eight participating in the tournament.
This is her tenth tournament of the season, in which she has three consecutive top 10s: fourth at the HSBC Women’s World Championship, eighth at the Blue Bay LPGA and sixth at the Ford Championship.
With the same number of strokes, 79 (+7) finished Clarisa Temelo, who a few weeks ago made her debut in her first major tournament, the Chevron Championship, but was unable to make the cut.
As for the rest of the Mexican players, Maria Fassi, was the best classified, although she also finished above par, with 75 strokes (+3). The player from Hidalgo had a promising start with two bogeys and two pars, however, she then shot double bogey and single bogey to close one over in the first part of the round. However, she could not improve in the afternoon session, in which she registered three more bogeys in exchange for a birdie and closed her participation in T63rd place.
María Balcázar and Fernanda Lira, finished the first round tied with 76 strokes, four over par, in T79. Maria recorded three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys on her card, with no birdie. Fernanda had four birdies on holes 6, 7, 8 and 18, although she also had four bogeys and two double bogeys.
On the other hand, Andrea Ostos Mendoza, put rubric in her card with 78 (+6). She had a good start with a birdie on her second hole, but then had many ups and downs, because although she had four birdies, she had a total of five bogeys and two double bogeys, in 108th place in the opening round.
Isabella Fierro did not have much luck either and signed a card of 80 strokes (+8). In the first part of the day, the Yucatan native made five bogeys on holes 1, 3, 4, 8 and 9, and in the second half of the round, she had two double bogeys on 14 and 18. The only birdie she managed to make was on hole 13. The Yucatan native was placed 128th, so tomorrow she will try to improve her score in order to move forward in the tournament.
Finally, Carolina Rotzinger, from Puebla, finished this first round with a total of 91 strokes (+19), with 12 bogeys, three double bogeys and a birdie on the 13th hole, to place 141st overall.
This Friday, the actions of the second round will begin at 7:00 a.m. local time.
