Clarisa Temelo Receives Sponsor Exemption for the Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba

Mayakoba, Quintana Roo, April 28, 2025 – Mexican golfer Clarisa Temelo has officially received a sponsor exemption to participate in the México Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, an LPGA event that will be played from May 22 to 25 in the state of Quintana Roo, marking the return of the tour to Mexican territory.

The player, born in Querétaro 18 years ago and currently a student at the University of Arkansas, is ranked 63rd in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), with four victories in her career. She is expected to be one of the highlights of the event as a local favorite.

With her inclusion, three Mexican players are now confirmed to compete in the tournament: in addition to Temelo, Isabella Fierro, who plays on the Epson Tour and also received an exemption, and Gaby López, who will enter directly as a regular LPGA Tour player.

It is worth remembering that in November of last year, Sofía Clarisa Temelo Escalera made history by becoming the first Mexican to win the Women’s Amateur Latin America (WALA), held at Lima Golf Club in the Peruvian capital. The championship is organized by The R&A and the ANNIKA Foundation.

The Querétaro native arrived in Peru as the highest-ranked player (No. 136) in the field and lived up to expectations by carding a 69 (-2) to finish at 275 (-9), defeating Emily Odwin of Barbados by six strokes and fellow Mexican Cory López by seven.

“Every year I played WALA, I had the feeling that I could win it,” said Sofía Clarisa after her flawless performance in Lima in 2024, having previously finished sixth in the 2023 edition and 15th in 2022.

This remarkable achievement earned her entry into three of the five LPGA Majors in 2025: The Chevron Championship (The Club at Carlton Woods, USA), The Amundi Evian Championship (Evian Resort Golf Club, France), and the AIG Women’s Open (Royal Porthcawl, Wales). Additionally, she received an exemption to play in The Women’s Amateur Championship (Nairn Golf Club, Scotland).

In 2024, Temelo posted excellent results: she achieved three top-10 finishes in her first collegiate season, tied for fourth place at the Mexican Women’s Amateur, and finished eighth at the Toyota Junior World Cup in Japan.

This year, Temelo Escalera reached her first Major Championship of the season in The Woodlands, Texas, following a strong start to the year with the Arkansas Razorbacks, where she helped her team claim the Purdue Puerto Rico Classic title, finishing third individually.

Before her historic appearance as one of the eight amateurs in The Chevron Championship, the Mexican golfer—who earned her first golf victory at the age of five with the support of her parents Horacio Temelo and Sofía Escalera—secured three Top-20 finishes early this year: 18th place at the Betsy Rawls, 15th at the Clemson Invitational, and 13th at the SEC Women’s Golf Championship.

Temelo is also familiar with representing Mexico internationally. In 2022, she played in Paris, France, as part of the national team in the Espirito Santo Trophy at the Women’s World Amateur Team Championship. The Mexican team, composed of Clarisa Temelo, Isabel Amezcua, and Lauren Daiana Olivares, finished 32nd in a tournament won by Sweden.

After eight years of absence, the professional women’s golf circuit returns to Mexico to host the Riviera Maya Open. The last LPGA Tour event held in the country was in 2017, with the Lorena Ochoa Invitational.

Featuring a field of 144 players, the Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba will be held at El Camaleón Golf Course, with a $2.5 million purse, serving as a prelude to the U.S. Women’s Open, a Major championship scheduled for May 29 to June 1.

The Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba is one of the 33 events on the LPGA calendar this year, a season that will distribute over $131 million in prize money, a historic record. The calendar includes stops in 14 U.S. states and 11 countries.

The event reinforces Quintana Roo’s status as a premier destination for international sports tourism. Tournament activities will begin on May 17, with the arrival of players, registration, and the first practice rounds. As an added attraction, on Saturday, May 24, the music group BACILOS will perform, featuring hits such as “Caraluna,” “Mi Primer Millón,” and “Tabaco y Chanel.”
