Kim Sei-Young, the last LPGA champion in Mexico, is back

Mayakoba, Quintana Roo, May 20, 2025.- The South Korean, Kim Sei-Young, is one of the three players who will be present in the field of 144 players who will participate in the MEXICO Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba, who have been champions in an LPGA tournament held in Mexico.

Kim, 32, lifted the trophy of the Lorena Ochoa Match Play 2017, precisely the last event of the women’s professional tour held at the Club de Golf Mexico, and where she beat Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn.

“Yes, it was a long time ago, and I have very good memories, in a different format we played in Mexico City. Amazing hotel, really great golf courses for match play, I traveled with my brother and my mom. And now, happy to be back in a different place, Cancun, close to the ocean, so when you are in the hotel you can see the beautiful view. I played the 18th hole today, amazing view.  It’s a little bit hot, but good to play golf.”

For Kim Sei-Young, this season has been complicated, as he has not achieved a Top 20, to achieve it he knows that it will depend a lot on the weather factor.  “Yes, it depends on how strong the wind is, because all the winds come from the ocean.  And then, if you play in the afternoon, the temperature is going to be higher. We’re going to need a lot of energy, so it all depends on how strong the wind is.”

The Seoul-born Seoul native accumulates 12 career LPGA Tour victories, including the Women’s PGA Championship, her first major in 2020, a season in which she was named Player of the Year. She is currently ranked 46th in the Women’s World Golf Rankings.

Like many other players, Sei-Young has a special admiration for Mexico’s Lorena Ochoa, a former world number one.

“She’s our best friend, she’s a legend. When I grew up, I watched her matches.  When I played in her invitational tournament, I met her, I was very nervous and I felt like I met a superstar, it was a great honor. There were other legends like Anika Sorenstam, for me it was like a dream”.

In her professional sports career that began in 2015, when she was rookie of the year, Kim Sei- Young, has achieved 71 Top 10, and has 14 million official dollars in earnings.
