The LPGA returns to Mexico after eight years
Mexico City, November 20, 2024.- The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) is returning to Mexico after eight years, and it does so in partnership with GS Sports Management. The leading company in Latin America for organizing professional sporting events, led by Gustavo Santoscoy Arriaga, is embarking on a new venture—this time with the LPGA.
In 2025, the Riviera Maya Open will take place from May 19 to 25, marking the return of women’s professional golf to the country after several years of absence.
A couple of years ago, Gabriela López, better known as Gaby, expressed her wish for an LPGA event in Mexico during a visit to Mayakoba, stating it would be a great boost for the sport. “I hope that people, sponsors, and different circuits are motivated to bring another tournament to the Riviera Maya or any other place in Mexico. The [tour players] always ask me when the next tournament in the country will be because they love coming here,” López said at the time.
Her dream will come true thanks to the work of GS Sports Management, whose goal is to expand into new markets while always responding to the demand from sports fans in our country.
“All the projects we’re working on for 2025 and 2026 are aimed at continued growth. Among the new projects is the return of golf, a sport that has grown in the country thanks to our current representatives and that had no tournaments here. That’s why we thought it was important to bring it back,” emphasized Gustavo Santoscoy García, CEO of GS Sports Management.
The last time Mexico hosted a women’s professional golf tournament was in 2017, with the Lorena Ochoa Invitational. The event first arrived in Mexico in 2008, becoming the first and only LPGA tournament in Latin America. Its inaugural edition was held at the Guadalajara Country Club, and in 2014 it moved to the Club de Golf México.
Currently, Mexico has three players on the LPGA Tour: Gaby López, Maria Fassi, and Isabela Fierro. This will be a great opportunity to see Mexican golfers compete on home soil.
Thus, the new LPGA Tour season will include a stop in the beautiful Riviera Maya, offering exceptional weather and the natural wonders of this popular tourist destination.
A press conference will be held in the coming days to reveal all the details of the event.
The LPGA, founded in 1950, is the largest and most important U.S.-based organization for women’s professional golf. Its calendar runs from January to November each year, with tournaments held across Asia, Europe, and North America.
